Great Barrier Island Walks

Take a ferry ride to the edge of the Hauraki Gulf and enjoy the magic of walking on Great Barrier Island.

Find the remains of a whaling station and old saw mill only a short walk from the Whangaparapara wharf on Great Barrier Island. There are many different tracks for your family to exlore and enjoy in this area. The Tramline Track crosses Great Barrier at its widest point and should take about six hours to walk. Look out for native birds and enjoy the views.

Families looking for a shorter option can take the Witheys track which loops back to Whangaparapara. This track has beautiful bush views but you will need to cross the stream three times so plan for wet feet.

The department of conservation provides more information about Walking tracks on Great Barrier Island in the booklet Great Barrier Island Aotea.
